This dashboard provides a comprehensive view of the Indigenous economy in Canada, highlighting the important contributions of Indigenous-owned businesses and the challenges they face. It brings together key data on economic impact, sentiment, and trade to illustrate their role in Canada’s economy. These insights support policymakers, researchers, and communities in better understanding trends, opportunities, and barriers within the Indigenous economy.

All the data in the dashboard is made publicly available by Statistics Canada and can be accessed on their website. The table numbers and survey sources of the data are noted at the bottom of each visualization.

A business in which one or more Indigenous persons collectively own at least 51% of the enterprise, consistent with Statistics Canada’s definition. Ownership may be by a single Indigenous owner or jointly by multiple Indigenous owners.

The Canadian Survey on Business Conditions (CSBC) is a quarterly Statistics Canada survey capturing self-reported information on business challenges, expectations, and trade conditions. Provides insights into sentiment, cost pressures, and planned responses to global shifts.

The Business Expectations Index captures the near-term outlook according to Canadian businesses. The index is timely, forward-looking and useful for a wide variety of business contexts. The Canadian Survey on Business Conditions (CSBC) from Statistics Canada is leveraged as a key input to construct quantitative business sentiment indicators for Canada and many business sub-populations. Index scores range from a minimum of zero (if all businesses expect a decrease/deterioration) to a maximum of 200 (if all businesses expect an increase/improvement). A value of 100 indicates “no net change” in business expectations relative to last quarter. Values above 100 indicate an improving outlook, while values below 100 signal a deteriorating outlook.
