Pathways to Indigenous Leadership in Executive and Governance Roles

Developed by the CCIB and Pathways Executive Search, this report examines Indigenous representation across executive and governance positions in Canada. Indigenous leadership representation is vital for advancing reconciliation, inclusive governance, and organizational performance; notably, PAIR-certified companies have consistently outperformed comparable market indexes. However, while over half of surveyed organizations identify Indigenous leadership as a strategic priority, measurable outcomes lag behind commitments.

Indigenous Peoples still hold less than one per cent of corporate board seats and senior executive roles, with nearly half of respondents rating workplace representation as low or very low. Advancing meaningful inclusion requires corporate Canada to look beyond applicant pipeline shortages and address institutional barriers, including rigid credentialing and Western definitions of leadership. Real progress demands shifting beyond token representation to embed Indigenous worldviews and decision-making influence at the boardroom table.
